Dr. Chandra Mukerji

Chandra Mukerji is primarily concerned with the material aspects of human cultures and communication processes. She is currently studying garden history and military history, particularly in 17th-century France, as ways to understand the mobilization of nature/land as a cultural resource in the development of state systems of power. She is planning research on the culture of childhood, and continues to cultivate interest in visualization processes in science and art. She is the author of From Graven Images (1983), a book on culture and the Industrial Revolution, and A Fragile Power (1989), a book on the relationships between science and the state. She also co-edited (with Dr. Michael Schudson) a book illustrating and analyzing recent popular culture studies in anthropology, history, sociology and literature, entitled Rethinking Popular Culture.
